Chapter 16

Madison’s angry outburst left her feeling completely exhausted and she slowly walked back toward the house and through the front door. She was numb as she made her way to the kitchen where Sophie still sat at the table.

Poor little thing, she thought, what must she be thinking!

She walked over to Sophie and knelt down.

“Sweetie,” she cooed, “did you take that box out of the cupboard?” knowing full well Sophie could not have reached it. Sophie shook her head slowly back and forth.

“Okay, that’s fine. We won’t talk about it anymore.”

Sophie nodded and studied her mother with a questioning look. She did not like it when her mother acted like this. Bad things happen when her mother gets upset. She wished Kevin was there. Kevin always made her feel better.

Sophie’s cheeks still radiated rosy pink and Madison laid the back of her hand upon her daughter’s plump, soft skin. She was still running a temperature.

“Do you want something to eat? Maybe some soup?” she asked. Sophie nodded again and managed a faint smile. Madison stood up and walked toward the pantry.

Soup. Yes, soup makes everything better.

As she busied herself with the preparations, she tried to make mindless small talk with her daughter, but her thoughts were firmly entrenched elsewhere. She still needed to clean up the broken glass from upstairs and find a way to cover the gaping hole in the window. Such a shame that the beautiful stained-glass had broken. That had to be Rebecca’s doing. Madison now understood absolutely that Rebecca did exist, and she renewed her resolve to get that presence out of the house.

Madison was not sure how to proceed, but knew she needed help. Her mind searched and grasped at anything in her memory about paranormal activity. All she could think of were movies she had watched as a child, and how families turned to the local priests for help in performing exorcisms and chasing out evil.

Madison shook her head. She always thought those movies were fiction, but here she was, living her own haunting story. The entire situation was beyond belief, but she knew what she and her daughter were experiencing was real, and not of this world. She needed help, and decided that a trip to the local Catholic Church the next day might be a good place to start. She had seen one called St. Timothy on their first visit to town. The same church the Brown family was interred at.

Madison wasn’t religious and certainly not Catholic, but surely the resident priest would not let that stop him from helping her. Yes, tomorrow she would speak with the priest in town and see what he had to say. She did not feel confused anymore. Although the knot in her stomach tightened, she felt strangely better, as if a dark cloud had lifted somewhat. She had a plan.

Madison set two steaming bowls of chicken noodle soup on the table and ripped open a box of crackers. Sophie limply picked up her spoon and lowered it into the hot broth.
